“Communities and countries and ultimately the world are only as strong as the health of their women.” – Michelle Obama
Dr Gemma Carey is a Sydney-based GP who provides comprehensive general practice care, with particular expertise in women's hormonal and mental health, ADHD assessment and management, and neurodivergent care.
With particular expertise in ADHD in women across the lifespan, Gemma provides comprehensive mental health support for female patients navigating ADHD, anxiety, depression, and complex neurodivergent presentations.
Originally trained in the UK, Gemma moved to Sydney in 2016 after completing her medical residency and finished her GP Fellowship in 2022. She has spent the past three years working in general practice with a dedicated focus on women's mental health and ADHD care.
ADHD in Women: Expertise Rooted in Clinical Skill and Lived Experience
Gemma's commitment to mental health began early in her training, including a formative term with Headspace Bondi Junction, where she worked closely with young people experiencing psychological concerns, including ADHD, anxiety, and mood disorders.
Her passion for ADHD care in women is deeply personal. Having been diagnosed with ADHD herself later in life, Gemma understands the unique challenges women with ADHD face — from delayed diagnosis to hormonal impacts on ADHD symptoms. She brings not only clinical expertise but lived experience, empathy, and insight to every consultation.
Comprehensive ADHD Assessment & Neurodivergent Care
Gemma has a particular interest in comprehensive ADHD assessment and management for women, supporting patients to understand both their challenges and their strengths. Her approach to ADHD treatment is holistic, collaborative, and evidence-based — integrating lifestyle modifications, psychological strategies, and medical management, including ADHD medication for women to help patients thrive.
She recognises that many women with ADHD also experience co-occurring conditions, and is currently expanding her knowledge in POTS (Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome) and hypermobility syndromes — conditions that frequently co-occur with ADHD and other forms of neurodivergence in women.
Professional Memberships & Ongoing ADHD Training
Gemma is an active member of the RACGP Special Interests Group in ADHD, ASD and Neurodivergence, and the Australasian ADHD Professionals Association (AADPA), reflecting her commitment to ongoing learning and best-practice neurodivergent care for women.
Beyond the Clinic
Outside of work, Gemma can be found walking her Cavoodle, Ruby, or spending time in nature with family and friends.
