Integrated
ADHD Assessment

Ponti Health’s GP led service aims to make the journey of assessing and then possible diagnosis of ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) thorough. We don’t take shortcuts.

If you are coming to one of our 4 Mental Health/ADHD GP’s please note:

  • They will act as your primary care provider prior. This is not a one and done appointment.

  • This may include heart assessments inc cardiology, collecting school reports and feedback from significant adults that have known you from childhood and various pathology tests

  • This may require 2-5 GP appointments prior to your first appointment with our Psychiatrist (if required)

  • You will have to register for MyMedicare (after your 2nd in-person appointment)

Please note that we are not an assembly line diagnostic centre - we believe in functional health outcomes.

Of the patients seeking ADHD evaluation, approximately 60% either don't have ADHD or present with other conditions requiring attention first.

ADHD assessment is serious healthcare, not a trending topic.

The Reality:

ADHD can look like depression. It can present as OCD. It can mimic anxiety. Is it hormonally driven? Is it situational?

Getting this wrong has real consequences.

Why This Matters:

These are serious and treatable psychiatric conditions. A rushed evaluation might miss what's actually happening. Or worse—treat the wrong thing entirely.

Your health deserves better than guesswork.

Our Approach:

We take time. Comprehensive evaluation, not quick tick-boxes.

We look deeper. Is it Anxiety, Perimenopause, PMDD, ADHD? Depression? OCD? Or something else entirely?

We get it right. Accurate diagnosis = effective treatment = you actually feeling better.

What You Get:

✓ Thorough foundational and foundational and mental health assessment with a Mental Health Specialist GP (not a 30-minute questionnaire)

✓ Treatment plan that's actually yours—fits your life, your brain, your goals

✓ Care that connects to your broader health (because ADHD doesn't exist in isolation)

✓ Support from specialists who understand the nuances

The Bottom Line:

When ADHD care is done thoughtfully from the start, it becomes the foundation for everything you want to accomplish.

This isn't JUST about managing symptoms. This is about you thriving.

WHERE DO YOU START?

STEP 1: GP Consultation - this is not a diagnostic appointment and acts as a preliminary assessment symptom review, medical history inc pathology/ECG, to understand the best path ahead. 2 - 5 GP appointments, as you may need assistance with your foundational health before you can begin treating anything else.

This may look like ensuring your thyroids, iron levels, hormonal health, sleep, heart health etc have been assessed from a primary care lens first.

STEP 2: Psychiatric Evaluation (if required) Ponti Health patients have priority access into Psychiatry rooms. This may not be a single appointment, depending on what else may need addressing it may require 2-6 appointments on average.

We are seeing approximately 60% of patients coming in for ADHD who in fact require treatment for something else entirely.

STEP 3: Once your Psychiatrist has confirmed your diagnosis and established a stable treatment plan, your Ponti Health GP is able to take over care and prescription in a 'Transfer-of-Care' model.

We have 4 GP’s who have completed the accreditation to be a ‘Continuation Prescriber’.

Your Integrated Care Pathway

The Ponti Health ADHD Assessment Clinic provides a thorough assessment (History, Pathology, Diagnostics & Investigations) with a Mental Health GP, then a seamless journey into Psychiatry rooms when required.

Ponti Health Mental Health GP’s won’t be able to diagnose and treat ADHD until mid 2027

Once medication has been stabilised by your Psychiatrist, our Mental Health Care GP’s are Continuation Prescribers who can take over care.

Important Updates About ADHD Diagnosis

24 June 2026

In NSW, ADHD can mostly be diagnosed by a Psychiatrist, Paediatrician or a Neurologist. This changes in June 2026 when approximately 300 GPs (primarily rural/regional GPs) will have completed their Tier 2 Endorsed training which will allow them to diagnose and initiate psychostimulant medication.

For some perspective/fun facts and why the bottleneck to access treatment there are:

  • Approximately 10,000 GPs in NSW. From June 2026, only 3% are authorised to diagnose and treat ADHD. This changes from July 2027 — exact numbers are not yet known. Watch this space.*

  • Approximately 1,100 psychiatrists serve NSW, out of 5,000 nationally.

  • NSW has a population of approximately 8.2 million. Australia's total population is approximately 27.2 million

18 May 2026

We understand that now there is a lot of confusion about whether GPs can diagnose ADHD and initiate prescriptions of psychostimulants. Here is a summary of what is happening;

  • The changes to ADHD diagnosis and management for GPs are different in every state

  • In NSW, recent changes have allowed GPs to have a more active role in diagnosing and managing ADHD

  • The first part was allowing appropriately trained GPs to become Continuation Prescribers; this means that they can continue prescribing psychostimulants on behalf of psychiatrists when a diagnosis of ADHD has been made, and a patient is stable on their dose of psychostimulants

  • The second part was to take a smaller number of GPs (only 300 in the first intake) to undergo more advanced Tier 2 Endorsed training which would allow them to diagnose and initiate psychostimulant medication. The GPs based in rural and remote communities were prioritised in this selection process, and the training takes 6 months to complete meaning an exceedingly small selection of GPs will be able to provide this service mid to late 2026.

  • The next round of Tier 2 training will commence in November 2026 and take 6 months to complete which means these GPs will be Tier 2 Endorsed Prescribers by July 2027; both Dr Elspeth Man and Dr Gemma Carey have applied for this training pathway and hope to be successful in gaining a training position.

  • It is also important to note that not all patients will be suitable for diagnosis via an Endorsed GP; those patients with complex mental +/- physical health conditions may be best suited to assessment with a psychiatrist.

Until this time, Dr Elspeth Mann and Dr Gemma Carey are both qualified Continuation Prescribers and can offer appointments for;

  • Continued Prescribing (for new patients as well as patients diagnosed by our Ponti Psychiatrists requiring continuing care)

  • GP Preliminary ADHD Assessments to facilitate prioritised referrals to our in-house Psychiatrists for ADHD Assessments

9 May 2026

We're writing to share something important we've been noticing more and more often—and we want to ensure you have the right information before investing time, energy, and money in the wrong direction.

We continue to receive numerous enquiries from people who have been to diagnostic centres specialising in ADHD, where they have been told their next step is to "see a psychiatrist for medication." This is incorrect.

Here's what you need to know: in Australia, as of May 2026, psychiatrists are the only medical providers who can both diagnose and treat ADHD. They can then transfer your care to a GP who is a ‘Continuation Prescriber’ - not all GP’s are.

We are told changing in NSW from 2027, when specially trained GPs can diagnose and treat ADHD. We have 3 of the 600+ GP’s in NSW who are at the starting gate for this.

In fact, a thorough ADHD assessment by a psychiatrist includes:

  • A comprehensive review of your medical history

  • Gathering school reports and feedback from parents and significant adults.

  • Understanding your current physical health (which impacts both diagnosis and treatment)

  • Exploring your symptoms in context—not in isolation

  • A proper diagnostic evaluation

  • A personalised treatment plan that may include medication, therapy, lifestyle changes, or all of the above

Many patients have come to us disappointed and frustrated after spending significant resources at diagnostic centres, only to learn they need to start the process again with a psychiatrist for a complete assessment.

Our advice?

Start with your GP. They know your health history and can provide a referral to a psychiatrist, which is essential for Medicare rebates and ensures continuity of care. If you're already seeing a good psychologist you trust, speak with them too—they can support you through the process and work collaboratively with your psychiatrist.

Before embarking on assessments at standalone diagnostic centres, have a conversation with your regular healthcare providers. They can help you understand the most effective—and most efficient—path forward.

If you have questions about ADHD assessment or treatment, our team is here to help. We believe in providing you with the information you need to make informed decisions about your health.

Our GPs and Psychiatrists aren't part of a call centre operation.

They have extensive experience across Australia's public and private health systems. They understand the complexities of mental health care because they've practised at every level.
