The Myth of ‘Taking It Easy’: How to Train Smart, Not Less, During Pregnancy

-By Aleea Newton, Proform Physiotherapy (30th September 2025)

Because your body is doing something extraordinary — and it deserves more than fear-based advice.

If you’re pregnant and love to move, you’ve probably heard it:

“Just take it easy.”

“Now’s not the time to exercise.”

“Be careful — don’t overdo it!”

While well-meaning, these phrases are often rooted in fear, not fact. And they can leave you feeling uncertain, even disconnected from your body at a time when you most need to trust it.

At Ponti Health, we’re here to challenge the outdated narrative that pregnancy equals pause. Instead, we invite you to reframe it: pregnancy is a time to train smarter, not less.

What Does “Smart” Training Look Like?

It’s not about pushing through or proving anything. It’s about supporting your changing body with movement that’s:

Intentional – tailored to your trimester, symptoms, and energy.

Adaptive – modified as needed to support comfort and safety.

Empowering – designed to build strength, mobility, and body awareness.

Smart training doesn’t mean dialling everything down to zero. It means staying curious about what your body needs today — and building a toolkit that evolves with you across pregnancy.

Why Movement Matters (Even More) During Pregnancy

Exercise during pregnancy can:

  • Reduce the risk of complications like gestational diabetes and hypertension

  • Support better sleep, energy, and emotional regulation

  • Maintain strength and endurance for birth and postpartum demands

  • Aid a faster recovery

And perhaps most importantly, it gives you a moment each day to reconnect with yourself — a space to breathe, move, and feel strong in your own skin.

The Bottom Line?

“Taking it easy” might mean listening more deeply. But it doesn’t mean giving up movement.

With the right support, you can keep training through pregnancy — safely, confidently, and with compassion.

If you're unsure how to start, our women’s health physios are here to guide you. We’ll meet you exactly where you are, and help you keep moving forward — with strength and softness in equal measure.

Your body is wise. Let’s train in a way that honours it.
