This journey starts with your GP, your primary care physician , then a Psychiatrist, Paediatrician or Neurologist. A select handful of GPs (300-600 of the 9500 GPs) will be able to do this in NSW from June 2026.

In NSW, Psychiatrists, paediatricians and neurologists primarily handle ADHD diagnosis and medication management. Recent reforms are empowering GPs to play a larger role. Training programs are being implemented to equip 300-600 GPs with the necessary skills to diagnose and manage conditions effectively.

This varies from clinic to clinic. Some places charge a specific fee for a particular diagnosis. We are not fans of this approach, as it assumes a diagnosis before even having the first consultation with a medical expert. The diagnosis and subsequent medication require consideration and time. It is not something to be taken lightly.

This is not a fad; the medication requires qualifications and experience.

If you are seeing our GP it may require 1-2 appointments, followed then by 2-3 Psychiatry appointments.

It's the entry point for Pathway 1 — an appointment with one of our GPs with a special interest in mental health, to explore a potential diagnosis and treatment plan for conditions such as ADHD, PMDD, perimenopause/menopause, anxiety, depression or trauma.

A psychiatrist is a medical doctor who specialises in diagnosing and treating mental health conditions, including prescribing medication. You'll see one under Pathway 2 if you've been referred by a GP or another specialist.

A GP who has undertaken additional training and been endorsed to prescribe and manage ADHD medication, working within our clinic's model of care.

This is Pathway 3 — a GP who continues your existing ADHD medication once you've already been diagnosed and stabilised by a treating Psychiatrist, Paediatrician or Neurologist, and you've provided a Transfer of Care letter.

ADHD can look like depression. It can present as OCD. It can mimic anxiety. Is it hormonally driven? Is it situational?

Psychostimulants prescribed incorrectly can lead to serious health outcomes for you and the people who love you. If you're after a quick tick-and-flick exercise, we're not it — we hold ourselves to a high standard of medicine, governed by our Medical Code of Ethics.

We know of places that take shortcuts, and we've seen and dealt with the effects of that in our rooms. Getting this wrong has real consequences for you as an individual.

We have doctors that can do both. Both are part of NSW Health's ADHD prescribing reforms, but they cover different stages of care.

In short: a Continuation Prescriber keeps an existing, specialist-established treatment plan going. An Endorsed Prescriber can start that plan in the first place. We have doctors that can do both

GP Continuation Prescriber. A GP who has completed NSW Health endorsed training and holds a General Authority Number. They can continue prescribing psychostimulant medication for patients 6 and over who already have an ADHD diagnosis and are stable on treatment. Continuation prescribers manage ongoing care. They do not diagnose ADHD or start new patients on medication.

GP Endorsed Prescriber. A more recently introduced role under NSW Health's reforms, with further advanced training. Endorsed prescribers can diagnose ADHD and initiate psychostimulant medication for newly diagnosed patients, without requiring a prior psychiatrist  assessment.
